Caregiver StrainToward an Enlarged PerspectiveSaint Louis University, St. Louis VA Medical Center This article attempts to broaden the conceptual perspective of caregiver strain by developing a generalized perspective that focuses on the demands and resources of caregiving. By extension, the perspective links caregiver strain to a typology relating caregiver strain and institutionalization. The result is intended to be a new and useful conceptualization for identifying factors that differentiate sources of caregiver strain and their consequences for both individuals and society.
