Caregiver Strain

Toward an Enlarged Perspective

James C. Romeis, PhD

Saint Louis University, St. Louis VA Medical Center

This article attempts to broaden the conceptual perspective of caregiver strain by developing a generalized perspective that focuses on the demands and resources of caregiving. By extension, the perspective links caregiver strain to a typology relating caregiver strain and institutionalization. The result is intended to be a new and useful conceptualization for identifying factors that differentiate sources of caregiver strain and their consequences for both individuals and society.
